I'm kara gardner
learning consultant

After fifteen years of classroom teaching and seven years of applying the science of learning to program design, I decided to launch Kara Gardner Learning Consultant.

For all of my projects, I draw upon the principles of learning science and familiarity with innovative learning technologies. I design and oversee the implementation of programs that help people thrive and fully contribute to the mission of their organization.

In addition to my work as the owner of Kara Gardner Learning Consultant, I am also a writer. I have a passion for musical theater and dance. In 2017 my book Agnes de Mille: Telling Stories in Broadway Dance won the Kurt Welil book prize.

I bring a love of teaching and learning, a fascination with creativity, and an interdisciplinary approach to all of my pursuits.

Experienced: Learning and development experience in the areas of biotechnology, Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion, leadership, and communication. Start-up experience in educational technology and reform. Two decades in the field of higher education teaching and designing courses on the visual and performing arts, building high-quality learning experiences, and training faculty in effective facilitation techniques.

Innovative: After 15 years of teaching at the college level, I joined the founding team for Minerva, a new university designed to equip students with adaptable skills through an immersive global experience. Minerva students learn in a virtual classroom and live in seven different cities. Our team worked with students and faculty to create intentionally-designed educational technology that facilitates meaningful classroom experiences while students travel around the globe.

Conversant with new educational technologies: There are a vast array of new tools available for engaging learners. I am especially interested in technology that allows us to create learning communities and transcend the boundaries of geography.

Enthusiastic about collaboration: My research and writing focuses on composers, writers, and choreographers who create Broadway musicals together, emphasizing each artist’s contribution to the story. I love to collaborate with people and make the most of each individual’s unique ideas.

Agnes de Mille: Telling Stories in Broadway Dance

This book explores the Broadway legacy of choreographer Agnes de Mille, from the 1940s through the 1960s. Six musicals are discussed in depth – Oklahoma!, One Touch of Venus, Bloomer Girl, Carousel, Brigadoon, and Allegro. Oklahoma!, Carousel, and Brigadoon were de Mille’s most influential and lucrative Broadway works. The other three shows exemplify aspects of her legacy that have not been fully examined, including the impact of her ideas on some of the composers with whom she worked; her ability to incorporate a previously conceived work into the context of a Broadway show; and her trailblazing foray into the role of choreographer/director. Each chapter emphasizes de Mille’s unique contributions to the original productions.
